Travel back in time with us to learn the 180 year old photographic process of cyanotype! We’ll be using recipes from the 1840s that remain largely unchanged to make highly-detailed, archival, contact-prints. By the end of the workshop you will have the skills and confidence necessary to recreate the process in the comfort of your home without the use of a darkroom or harsh chemicals.
Cyanotype is both cost effective and forgiving as a process. It is a wonderfully accessible printing method and this workshop will walk you through this low-cost technique. From the bare bones to an advanced setup we will go over what you need and how to get it on any budget. We will explore tips and tricks for effective printing and discuss how to embrace spontaneity. In addition, this workshop will break down the differences between solar-printing and UV light-printing — whether you are budget-conscious or have an existential yearning, the pros and cons of both approaches will be looked at. We will tackle the nitty gritty of getting the most out of your materials from exposure, to rinsing, to oxidizing your archival print.
This workshop is open to all ages, but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Technical expertise or prior experience with printing is not required. At the end of the workshop each participant will take home a completed print, and a kit of materials necessary to make more prints at home.
Facilitated by Will Maclean a.k.a Blueboy, a self-taught London-based artist who uses early photographic techniques and analog equipment throughout his practice. His recent work in cyanotype printing has been featured in a solo exhibition entitled, Blue in the Face at Goodsport Gallery and as part of Forest City Gallery’s Develop the Earth, Pier wall exhibition.
