Friday, September 7, 2018toThursday, October 11, 2018

Sept 7 - Oct 11, 2018

Opening Reception - Sept 7 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Artist Talk - 7:45pm

Forest City Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition Of, In or Under by Toronto/Berlin Artist Jasmine Reimer.

Absurd and visceral combinations of materials, objects, and spaces characterize Jasmine Reimer’s newest body of work. Of, In or Under is an immersive space consisting of approximately 150 green objects, sculptures, materials, forms and entities.

It is a universe, a cosmos that is simultaneously exterior and interior, natural and artificial, human and non-human, primordial and contemporary. Her multi- sensorial world contains organic elements, such as plants and insects, banal goods including toilet paper and dishes, and frogs, snakes, snails, branches, fingers... accurately cast in dynamic green detail and all of which are ‘beings’. Her sculptural works, made through acts of casting, assemblage and resurfacing, speak to the significance of transformation, alterity and the complex task of remaining fluid.

Reimer’s debut immersive installation situates Forest City Gallery as an exterior shell employed by her to house this individual and yet diverse universe. Her installation is a place-within-a-place-within-a-place echoed by its inhabitants: owls carry and cultivate life for other birds, fingers grow from hands and her overall delivery of excess and materiality addresses the rituals, rhythms and sensations that shape a physical existence.

Reimer received a BFA from Emily Carr University in 2009 and a MFA from The University of Guelph in 2015. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Small Obstructions’ at Georgia Scherman Projects in Toronto, ‘Andre Ethier and Jasmine Reimer’ at Projet Pangee in Montreal and ‘the harder softer side’ at The Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina. Past awards include The Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council Project Grants, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Award and the Canadian Millennium Achievement Award. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally and included in private collections across Canada. In February 2017 she released her first book of poetry titled, Small Obstructions and was published in BlueStem Magazine by Eastern Illinois University. Upcoming projects include a residency at The International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York City and an exhibition/installation at Mono8 Gallery in Manila, Philippines.
