Join us for an evening of raucous, frenzied comics-making while learning how to print zines old-school on a risograph printer.
Participants will collaborate on one-page stream-of-consciousness comics passed around a circle. The first hour will focus on just drawing and getting to know each other's sense of humour and aesthetic. Hour two we hard copy the comics we've made using the scan bed of the RISO machine, printing each one in a different colour, experimenting with texture and style. Finally, in the last hour we'll cut and fold our zines and high five each other.
Participants will take home one of each zine created that very evening!
All materials will be provided and participants will be able to take home a unique RISO print of their collaborative comics.
Facilitated by Elk Paauw, Forest City Gallery’s resident print technician who has been repairing our RISO printer since May. Elk is a comics artist and PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario in Theory and Criticism. In addition, Elk is an adjunct professor at Fanshawe College and Western University teaching film and trans studies. In another life, Elk performed as half of the cartoon band Spooky Action, and was host/curator of a monthly international animated children's film series at SIFF Cinema Uptown in Seattle, Washington. Elk has a master's degree in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he wrote his thesis on the philosophy of time.
