Facilitated by: Eric Mummery

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of letterpress printing through an accessible and playful process using lego as a printing surface and image-making material. Participants will design and build their own printable 8-bit pixel art composition using standard lego tiles, learning how relief printing works through experimentation and tactile engagement.

The workshop begins with a brief overview of letterpress history, core printing concepts (relief, pressure, ink, registration), and examples of contemporary experimental print practices. Participants will then be guided through composing a printable surface using lego, inking techniques, and printing by hand. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how material choices, pressure, and composition can affect your printed results.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will have produced at least one finished print and gained foundational knowledge of the relief printing process. The workshop encourages curiosity, low-risk experimentation, and collaboration, making printmaking approachable for beginners while offering conceptual and material depth for more experienced participants.

All materials will be provided. No prior printmaking experience is required. The workshop is designed to be inclusive, adaptable, and welcoming to a wide range of creative backgrounds.

Facilitated by Eric Mummery, a London based visual artist, printmaker and local letterpress printer whose work transforms their experiences with anxiety and depression into visually compelling anthropomorphized forms. Utilizing familiar graphic elements, their prints combine and reinterpret common representations of mental health struggles, such as the looming dark cloud and the inner daemon. Eric's intention is twofold: to benefit their own mental health journey through the creation of these images, and to offer viewers a visual experience that might resonate deeply and provide insight into their own subconscious. Eric studied printmaking at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University and their work has been showcased in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions internationally, including in Canada, the US, Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Serbia, France, and China, notably at the Guanlan International Print Biennial.
