Join us for our first in a series of Media Collaboratory workshops! This hands-on workshop is an introduction to working with Tropy, a free and open-source tool designed for managing large collections of images and their metadata. Effectively organizing and annotating images is essential for artists documenting exhibitions, creating collaborative visual archives, and preparing materials for catalogues and publications.
Do you have a folder of images that you never got around to sorting? Are you embarrassed to show others the mess of images in your Downloads folder? Do you have trouble remembering if your favourite exhibition photograph was IMG001.jpg, IMG002.jpg, or IMG114_final_test_final2.jpg?! If so, this workshop on Tropy is for you! Participants will learn how to import, organize, and annotate images, creating structured and searchable collections. We’ll explore how Tropy can streamline documentation for exhibitions, making it easier to track installation views, artwork details, and organize your collection of visual research.
Additionally, we’ll cover best practices for metadata management to ensure accurate citations in publications, exhibition catalogues, and archival records. Whether you’re an artist, researcher, or curator, this workshop will help you develop a sustainable system for managing your visual materials. Rather than a technical demonstration of Tropy, the workshop will be determined by the needs of the participants, and suggest workflows that can be refined to your specific needs. Bring your own laptop (Win/Mac/Linux) and images to work with. No prior experience with metadata or Tropy is required!
Facilitated by Tobias Ewé, an independent researcher with a PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Their research involves sound art and technology, which is reflected in their lifelong interest in open-source software and using low-tech solutions to high-tech problems.
