Syncopate For- Scott Bertram

Friday, June 27, 2014 to Friday, July 25, 2014

Opening Reception: Friday, June 27th, 7:00- 10:00 PM

FCG is proud to present an exhibition by painter Scott Bertram, 12th annual RBC Painting Competition Semi-Finalist.

Scott will also be presenting an artist talk on Saturday, June 28th from 1:00- 2:00 PM at Forest City Gallery

About the Exhibition: The work in “Syncopate For” is from a body of work that was in some way initiated by an experience in the dense forests of Vancouver Island, looking up at the sky through the forest canopy. However, any resemblance of this original source has been mostly lost through various types of anagrammatic distortions and in the end these paintings communicate a different kind of meaning. The composing of these paintings has not been an orchestration towards a preconceived image, but instead has been improvised one step at a time. This slow emergence of form was often disturbed or interrupted by placing stresses or accents where they wouldn't normally occur. The reason for including these disturbances is not entirely known; they are surely for a purpose, though what that is remains uncertain.

About the Artist: Scott Bertram has a BFA from the University of British Columbia Okanagan and an MFA from NSCAD University. He was a semi-finalist in the 12th RBC Canadian Painting Competition and has received many other awards such as Honourable Mention for the HRM Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program, a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship, and two BC Arts Council Senior Scholarship Awards. His work has been shown across Canada as well as in Australia, Germany, and the UK. He currently teaches painting at OCAD University and otherwise divides his time between Toronto and Vancouver Island. Bertram is represented in Montreal by Galerie BAC.
