Forest City Gallery is pleased to present In the Hem of Emma Bovary’s Winter Gown, an exhibition of recent drawings and paintings by Montreal artist, Jamie Macaulay. Situated at the crossroads of abstraction and representation, Macaulay’s paintings combine elements drawn from landscape, topography, architecture, and imagination. Flippant, playful, funny and stark, Macaulay’s loosely woven structures, stacks, clouds, and bodily forms call attention to the intricate binding of abstraction, reference, cognition, and memory. Through an intuitive practice of layering, scraping, erasing and minimalist drawing, Macaulay’s work celebrates the “impure potential” of drawing and painting as muddy, vital, voluble and open.
Jamie Macaulay holds a BA in philosophy from the University of Victoria and an MFA from Stony Brook University. His work has been exhibited in Canada, Europe, and the United States, including recent exhibitions at Evans Contemporary Gallery (Peterborough, ON), Modern Fuel Artist Run Center (Kingston, ON), Point Gallery (Salt Spring Island, BC), Le Ranch Project Space (Montreal), and Bowery Gallery (New York). Macaulay currently lives and works in Montreal where he teaches studio arts and art history at John Abbott College.
