Saturday May 9th

1-4pm

Facilitated by: Sebastian Di Trolio and Joe Heindl of FRAMES Film Series

In this hands-on DIY film workshop, we’ll explore an inventive array of techniques for

creating our own animated 16mm film loops, as well as learn the basic fundamentals of

film projection. Think of it as assembling experimental analogue GIF's!

This session will provide a fully tactile experience, encouraging participants to combine a variety of artistic approaches such as painting, drawing, splicing and etching on both transparent film and existing 'found footage'. We'll also explore ways to manipulate the film’s optical soundtrack to distort and synthesize audio elements alongside our animated images.

Whether endeavouring for meticulous frame-by-frame drawings or spontaneous ink

abstractions, the process offers a first-hand understanding of the essential principles of animation as well as an introductory primer on the mechanical function of the 16mm Projector.

All materials will be provided and absolutely no prior knowledge or experience with the medium is required. Simple experiments often yield vibrant and surprising results!

Facilitated by Sebastian Di Trolio and Joe Heindl.
