About LIVE FROM PATTERN HUT:

Who are we (with) in the studio? Who is Bourgeois looking towards as she turns from her drawing?

Black and Yabut's body of work together begins from the shared fascination with holding her gaze, and continues by filling some of the spaces in between. It builds on their common interests in early 20th century women’s studio practices, representation, craft, pattern, chance, and difference to reveal a series of tactile and cognitive meetings. Through drawing games, mirroring, and repetition, they come to “know with” or alongside one another, revealing the meaning of the Latin verb cognosco or cognition. “Knowing with” is a mode of inquiry that enables them to move in sync, and closer towards the figures in feminist art history with whom they share formal, material, and conceptual lineage.

Alongside the artist talks, Black and Yabut will launch a hand-bound limited edition book published in conjunction with the exhibition LIVE FROM PATTERN HUT.

The bookwork is an accordion portfolio that contains reproductions of six film stills from Black and Yabut's work Maman and Me. On the reverse, a critical text about their collaboration by Jen Kennedy entitled "Fugitive Patterns," is paired with images from the performative photograph "LOUISE," the work that Kennedy calls Black and Yabut's "primal scene." The design of the book encourages a playful, repetitive mirroring process of unfolding that echoes the cutting, drawing, and photographic processes that form the basis of their collaboration.

The publication will be available at Forest City Gallery, DNA Bookshop, and released online (link above).
